Q.165. What is baptism?
A. Baptism is a sacrament of the New Testament in which Christ has ordained washing with water in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit[1] as a sign and seal of our being joined to Christ,[2] of the remission of our sins through his blood,[3] of rebirth by his Spirit,[4] of adoption,[5] and resurrection unto everlasting life;[6] and it is the means of solemnly admitting those baptized into the visible church[7] and of their making a public commitment that they belong completely and only to the Lord.[8]
